Milkfish will mature when they reach the age of five years, but they only spawn in fully saline waters. Their spawning ground usually occurs near coral reefs during the warms months of the year on the new or full moon, taking place mostly at night. Mature females around eight years old and weigh about 6 kg can produce between 3 to 5 million eggs per spawn.

The milkfish eggs and larvae will stay in the planktonic stage for two to three weeks, before they settle. Once they become juvenile, milkfish will swim into brackish waters. Like the adults, juvenile milkfish feed on wide variety of planktonic item from detritus, zooplankton and algae.
